National Voter Registration Day 2020

National Voter Registration Day (NVRD) is a nonpartisan civic holiday celebrating our democracy. First observed in 2012, it has quickly gained momentum ever since. Nearly 3 million voters have registered to vote on the holiday to date!

At the League of Women Voters of Philadelphia, people are constantly reaching out to us to ask how they can help register voters. To celebrate NVRD this year, we’re excited to highlight several organizations in the Philadelphia area doing vital voter registration work in the region! Read on to learn more and find out how you can get involved.

HeadCount.org

HeadCount.org is a non-partisan organization that uses the power of music to register voters and promote participation in democracy. We reach young people and music fans where they already are — at concerts and online — to inform and empower. To celebrate NVRD, HeadCount will be hosting two events in Philadelphia. They will be partnering with the NET Center at Broad and Lehigh for a voter education and registration and doing an event event in partnership with When We All Vote (more about them later!) at the Coleman Library. Anyone interested in volunteering with HeadCount should reach out to Kelly Chambers, Philadelphia Field Organizer, at kellyc@headcount.org. For those looking for more digital opportunities, they will have peer to peer texting sessions available.

Project HOME

The mission of the Project HOME community is to empower adults, children, and families to break the cycle of homelessness and poverty, to alleviate the underlying causes of poverty, and to enable all of us to attain our fullest potential as individuals and as members of the broader society. Since 1999, their Votes for Home! initiative has registered more than 16,000 voters and mobilized thousands to vote.

This year they will be hosting virtual voter outreach through text and phone banking that you can do from home. You can sign up for voter registration training here.

SEAMAAC

SEAMAAC’s mission is to support and serve immigrants and refugees and other politically, socially and economically marginalized communities as they seek to advance the condition of their lives in the United States.

Per the Philadelphia Citizen, throughout the spring, as thousands of people every day received meals and boxes of food from SEAMAAC, each box also included pamphlets for the census, and nonpartisan information about voter registration and absentee ballots.

To learn more about volunteering with SEAMAAC, you can fill out their online form here.

When We All Vote

When We All Vote is a non-profit, nonpartisan organization that is on a mission to increase participation in every election and close the race and age voting gap by changing the culture around voting, harnessing grassroots energy, and through strategic partnerships to reach every American.

You can follow their GenZ Voter Registration Team as they work to reach, register and recruit young voters in Philadelphia at @whenphillyvotes. They center the leadership of young people in the region, hosting a My School Votes National Student Ambassadors Weekly Meeting.

You can sign up to volunteer or become a Voting Squad Captain here.

In addition, at LWV Philly we have several upcoming opportunities for people who are looking to make a difference!

Join us on September 24th for a Poll Worker Info Session to learn more about how you can make a difference this November by becoming a poll worker. You can also join us for a Virtual Postcard Party on October 5th to help get out the vote among older adults. If you want to help register voters at future LWV co-sponsored events, email us at voterservices@lwvphilly.org.
